Submodalities – Sn Old Postcard Metaphor Reply. Shit Happens to Good People. Leave It in the Past.

Somehow I cannot post replies in this forum as I lack a reply button. PLEASE HELP FIX THAT.

Nevertheless, I used The Old Postcard Metaphor not to erase the memories but to chanhge their submodalties.

In cases of childhood abuse, when memories become suddenly and spontaneously vivid and the person feels he/she is "ran by those", I found it useful to reframe those memories by associating them into the past (hence an old postcard metaphor with old fading images and a general static feel to it), AND via changing submodalities, to make the memory less traumatic.

In general, the idea is, "Shit happens to good people and when it happened in the past, this is where it belongs". Just as old pictures become even older pictures, old tapes become worn out and "tired", bad memories become just as releveant as ancient pictures and the voices from the past fade. Would it not be useful to put those things on the shelf of the past? Would it not be useful to create a new movie starting now, rather than reliev the old, ‘Tired" past which really is only the past?

What colors can we aqdd to make the now more exciting, more fun, more compelling? What sounds do we put into these new movies? etc. Same idea.

The same as knowing that breaking the arm once was enough and rebreaking it again just to prove the point it was broken is useless. It was n the past , and how can we make it less relevant to now?

I am not a proponent of erasing memories, but placing them such that an individual is free of the pain related to those, able to move forward despite the fact "shit happened".
